Bothin Resident Camp

Camp Life & Activitiesgirl with a giraffe

Bothin is a place of fun and friendship. With a wide variety of programs that range from theater arts to cooking programs, fine arts to sailing, there’s a choice for every girl and something new to try each year campers return.

A variety of housing options from dormitories to open air cabins and platform tents exist at Bothin. Campers live in units based on their program and age. Most units range in size from 12-24 girls. Girls not only have the opportunity to participate in the activities for their specific program, but there are several all-camp activities available to girls throughout the week.

Girls come to Bothin for 6 days and 5 nights. For all sessions, check in runs from 1:30pm to 4pm on Sunday afternoons. Parents are responsible for girls’ transportation to camp and are encouraged, upon arrival, to tour their campers’ living unit and meet their campers’counselors. The staff and campers in a living unit will spend the entire week together. They’ll spend time after check in getting to know each other and deciding, as a group, on program activities. By dinnertime each living unit will know the fun in store for them at Bothin!performing arts play

After dinner on the first night, all campers and staff head to the opening campfire. Singing songs, watching skits, learning about camp, and meeting the rest of the staff all around a roaring fire kicks our session off with a bang!

Meals
Our food service staff at resident camp prepares variety of pleasing and nutritious meals appropriate for children. Camp food isn’t what it used to be! Our camps serve plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs and breads. Salad and sidebars are available and snacks are provided in the afternoons. Meals are served family style in the Dining Hall. We do offer a vegetarian alternative at each meal. During breakfast, a cereal bar is available in addition to the main meal. During lunch and dinner we offer a fresh salad bar as a supplement to the main meal. If you have certain tastes, allergies, dietary needs or requirements based on religious or philosophical beliefs, we should discuss this as we may or may not be able to meet your requirements. Contact happycamper@girlscoutsnorcal.org to clarify what can be provided at camp.

Camp Activities

The Swimming Pool is always the most popular place in camp. Luaus, barbeques, pool parties, water races, and treasure dives are just a few of the exciting possibilities at swim time. Under the watchful eyes of certified Lifeguards and trained staff, girls can practice their strokes or just relax and float!

The Art Barn is the center of creative expression at Camp Bothin. The colorful mural that takes up the entire east wall was painted by campers and staff alike and brings out the artist in everyone! Whether working with clay, drawing, painting, or making a craft, you’ll be amazed at what comes from spending time at the Art Barn.friends

At least twice a week our spectacular program staff put on an event for the entire camp. A pirate meal or counselor hunt could be in store! At these all camp activities girls from every living unit get to join together for a few hours of fun.

Our Archery Range is set in the shade of a beautiful old oak tree and is versatile enough for even the youngest campers. The targets can be set close for beginners, or longer to challenge our more experienced archers, but it’s always safety first! Before the girls get to try out the equipment our trained instructors teach them the rules of the range. When they stand and take aim, we know they have the knowledge to keep themselves and others safe.

Wednesday night is cookout night for everyone in camp! Each living unit plans out a dinner early in the week. They practice fire building and look through receipts. When they’ve decided, they write down all the food and equipment they’ll need to make it happen. Our kitchen and program staff gather all the supplies they’ll need so that when it’s time to cook they can get right to it. Dutch Oven Lasagna, Baked Potatoes, and Chicken k-bobs are some of our favorites, but the desserts are what make the cookout complete!

When Friday afternoon finally comes around and it’s time for check out, girls will have had the opportunity to sing, play, swim, learn, laugh, hike, and grow. Parents pick up their campers between 2pm and 3pm. Girls go home with all the awards they earned, a Bothin patch, lots of dirty clothes, and memories to last until next summer!

“My daughter was walking about 10 feet off the ground when we picked her up and she talked endlessly about camp all the way home and for several days after. It was a tremendous growth experience for her. We are already looking forward to next year.” Camp Bothin parent

“My daughter really enjoyed learning to cook group meals at the campfire and used those skills to cook a meal for 12 people on our family vacation.” Camp Bothin parent
