Girl Scout Awards Update

Yes, you heard right, the awards requirements are changing!  For the 2009-2010 Girl Scout Registration year, girls who are beginning the Bronze, Silver, or Gold Awards have a choice between the current award guidelines or the new award guidelines.  The new award guidelines can be found on the GSUSA website. The current award guidelines for the bronze Award can be found in the Junior Girl Scout Handbook.  The current guidelines for the Silver Award can be found in the Girl Scout Silver Award Insert (Focus Book).  The current guidelines for the Gold Award can be found in the Girl Scout Gold Award Insert (Focus Book).

(Please Note:  The award prerequisites at the Silver Award and the Gold Award levels that are outlined in the Girl Scout Cadette and Senior Handbooks are outdated and not accepted at the council as valid work.)

Here is the skinny on how we are going to handle it the upcoming changes:

Council Level Trainings

For the 2009-2010 Girl Scout Registration year, we are offering trainings throughout the council at the Silver and Gold Award levels.  These trainings will focus on the current guidelines that include the Leadership Award, the Career Award, and the 4B’s Challenge.  The council will begin trainings on the new GSUSA guidelines beginning in the 2010-2011 Girl Scout Registration year.  A girl may begin the award prerequisites without attending a training in either the current or new guidelines as long as they reads the guidelines thoroughly and follows all requirements.

Gold Award Guidelines and Process

The current Gold Award guidelines can be found in the Girl Scout Gold Award Insert (Focus Book).  The new Gold Award guidelines can be found on the GSUSA website.  For the 2009-2010 school year, they may choose which set of guidelines they would like to use.  Regardless of which they choose, they must follow that set of guidelines until they complete the project.

When the prerequisites are complete, the girl must formulate a project and complete the Gold Award Project Proposal paperwork to submit to the council office for committee review and approval.  Once the project is approved, the girl may begin her project.  When the Gold Award project is complete, the girl writes the Gold Award Project completion paperwork and submits it the council for approval.  When the final project is accepted by the council as a completed project, they may pick up their Gold Award pin at the council office.

Silver Award Guidelines and Process

The current Silver Award guidelines can be found in the Girl Scout Silver Award Insert (Focus Book).  The new Silver Award guidelines can be found on the GSUSA website.  For the 2009-2010 school year, they may choose which set of guidelines they would like to use.  Regardless of which they choose, they must follow that set of guidelines until they complete the project.

When the prerequisites are complete, the girls formulate a project plan and the Troop Leader approves the project.  When the project is complete, the girls submit their project completion paperwork to the council office for review and processing.  Once it has been accepted they may purchase the Silver Award pin at the council office store.

Bronze Award Guidelines and Process

The current Bronze Award guidelines can be found in the Junior Girl Scout Handbook.  The new Bronze Award guidelines can be found on the GSUSA website.  For the 2009-2010 school year, they may choose which set of guidelines they would like to use.  Regardless of which they choose, they must follow that set of guidelines until they complete the project.

When the prerequisites are complete, the girls along with an adult(s) formulate a project plan and the Troop Leader approves the project.  When the project is complete, the troop Leader may purchase the Bronze Award pins at the council office store.

Transition Timeline

Girls beginning the process of earning an award at any level have a choice during the 2009-2010 Girl Scout registration year to use the current or the new guidelines for the awards.  If a girl chooses the current guidelines, she must continue with them until they are complete.  Even though the council is transitioning to the new guidelines in the Girl Scout 2010-2011 registration year, she will not be required to start over or transfer work, she will just continue on her original path to completion.

Here is an example:  A Senior Girl Scout in the 9th grade starts her Gold Award prerequisites under the current guidelines during the 2009-2010 Girl Scout registration year.  She has the same deadline as everyone else for completion, her 18th birthday or September 30th after graduation from high school – whichever comes later.  In her case, that is the 2012-2013 school year as her last year in high school and her 18th birthday. She works steadily toward completing her prerequisites and formulating a project, during that time though, the council and GSUSA has completely changed over to the new guidelines.  She does not need to change and start using the new guidelines in the middle, she just continues with the old guidelines until her project is completed.

Girls beginning their prerequisites in the 2010-2011 Girl Scout registration year should begin with the new guidelines which we will be training on during that time.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. It symbolizes outstanding accomplishments in the areas of leadership, community service, career planning and personal development. A girl must be a registered Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador and have successfully completed specific requirements before she may begin working on the Girl Scout Gold Award project. This special project is an extension and a compilation of all that she has learned in Girl Scouting.

Religious Recognitions

Girl Scouting promoted and encourages girls to participate in faith-based programs.  It has been part of the Girl Scout tradition since its inception in 1912 and ramains a cornerstone of the Girl Scout program.

Girl Scouts recognizes the religious diversity that exists within our communities. Many times, girls in the same troop represent a wide variety of faiths. Troop Leaders help girls develop respect and appreciation for each others individual beliefs.

What are Religious Awards?

  • Religious Awards are available in over 25 different faiths.
  • Girls can earn the awards independently of their troop,
  • Religious Awards programs are created by the various Religious groups to encourage girls to grow stronger in their faith
  • GSUSA recognizes these programs and allows the recognition to be worn on the official uniform
  • Each religious organization develops and administers it’s own program

Download the To Serve God Religious Awards Brochure.  This brochure has detailed information on who to contact for your particular faith.

How do we get started on these programs?

  • Download the To Serve God Religious Awards Brochure
  • Contact the Religious organization directly to order the workbook (information for each faith is on the To Serve God Religious Awards Brochure)
    • Each girl needs her own booklet to document progress
    • Some religions offer adult manuals for counselors and mentors
  • Parents Should review the Program Guidelines
    • Some programs require that girls be official "members" of the religious institution.
    • Age/Grade requirements vary from program to program
    • Each program sets its own guidelines as to who may serve as a counselor.  Some programs require clergy to serve as counselor, other programs allow parents or other family members to serve as counselor
  • Girls must complete the requirements, obtain the proper signatures and follow the instructions to order the recognition or pin.
    • These recognitions or pins are not available in your Girl Scout Store
    • The award should be presenter in a meaningful ceremony
    • The award can be presented at anytime of the year (don;t forget that Girl Scout Sunday/Sabbath is in March)

If you have questions contact tstrickland@girlscoutsnorcal.org or 408-287-4170 ext 246.
