Lou Henry Hoover, first lady, Stanford graduate, and avid outdoor enthusiast brought Girl Scouting to the west coast. Mrs. Hoover was an active Girl Scout moving from troop leader to president of the national organization throughout her career. After her husband's presidency, Hoover returned to the west coast bringing Girl Scouting with her, first to Palo Alto. Adult Learning Course Requirements Table
Core Leadership Series | ||
|
GSUSA Orientation (45 min.) This course is offered online, and as a home study course. |
Take this course before meeting with girls. | It is required for at least one adult in attendance at every troop or group meeting/outing to take all four Core Leadership courses: GSUSA Orientation, Getting Started, Safety-Wise, and Leadership Essentials. |

Welcome Session (15 min.) This course is only offered in-person. |
Your Welcome Session is a 15-minute meeting with a council representative.
Please schedule your Welcome Session after you’ve taken GSUSA Orientation. |
Required for at least one adult from the troop or group (need not be in attendance at every meeting). |

Getting Started (2 hours) This course is offered in-person, online, and as a home study course. |
Take this course before meeting with girls, and after your “Welcome Session” with your CDD and GSUSA Orientation. | It is required for at least one adult in attendance at every troop or group meeting/outing to take all four Core Leadership courses: GSUSA Orientation, Getting Started, Safety-Wise, and Leadership Essentials. |

Safety-Wise (45 min) This course is offered online, and as a home study course. |

Leadership Essentials (2 hours) This course is offered in-person, online, and as a home study course. |
Take this course after your “Welcome Session” with your CDD, GSUSA Orientation, Getting Started, Safety-Wise. It is recommended that you take this course within 4 months of meeting with girls. | It is required for at least one adult in attendance at every troop or group meeting/outing to take all four Core Leadership courses: GSUSA Orientation, Getting Started, Safety-Wise, and Leadership Essentials. |
Grade Level Courses | ||

Girl Scout Daisy Leadership (2 hours) This course is offered in-person, online, and as a home study course. |
Take a grade level course upon completion of the core leadership series, and as soon as possible after meeting with girls. As girls progress through the grade levels it is recommended that you take the appropriate grade level course. |
This course is not required, but it is highly recommended for at least one adult in attendance at every Daisy troop meeting/outing |

Girl Scout Brownie Leadership (2 hours) This course is offered in-person, online, and as a home study course. |
Take a grade level course upon completion of the core leadership series, and as soon as possible after meeting with girls. As girls progress through the grade levels it is recommended that you take the appropriate grade level course. |
This course is not required, but it is highly recommended for at least one adult in attendance at every Brownie troop meeting/outing |

Girl Scout Junior Leadership (2 hours) This course is offered in-person, online, and as a home study course. |
Take a grade level course upon completion of the core leadership series, and as soon as possible after meeting with girls. As girls progress through the grade levels it is recommended that you take the appropriate grade level course. |
This course is not required, but it is highly recommended for at least one adult in attendance at every Junior troop meeting/outing |

Teen Advisor (2 hours) This course is only offered in-person. |
Take a grade level course upon completion of the core leadership series, and as soon as possible after meeting with girls. As girls progress through the grade levels it is recommended that you take the appropriate grade level course. |
This course is not require, but it is highly recommended for at least one adult in attendance at every Cadette, Senior, or Ambassador troop meeting/outing. |
Traveling and Outdoor Series | ||

Travel Troop - Extended (2 hours) This course is only offered in-person. |
Take this course when planning trips of 3 days or longer, national and international trips. | This course is not required but is highly recommended for troops planning a trip of 3 days or longer, national and international trips |

Backyard Basics (2 hours) This course is only offered in-person. |
Take this course before troop has an indoor overnight. | It is not required, but recommended that at least one adult per group take this course or Troop Camping Certification (TCC) before cooking outside or first indoor overnight. If you have taken TCC you do not need to take this course. |

Troop Camping Certification (6 hours+) This course is only offered in-person. |
Take this course before troop cooks OR sleeps outdoors (or in shelters without electricity OR indoor plumbing) | Required of at least one adult who will attend the outing and who is involved in the planning process for the trip |

Troop Camping Certification PLUS (6 hours+) This course is only offered in-person. |
This course can be taken to satisfy Troop Camping Certification requirements (includes TCC for a girl attendee also). Take this course or Troop Camping Certification before troop cooks OR sleeps outdoors (or in shelters without electricity OR indoor plumbing) |
This course or Troop Camping Certification is required of at least one adult who will attend the outing and who is involved in the planning process for the trip |

Backpacking (2 hours) This course is only offered in-person. |

Event Director (3 hours) This course is only offered in-person. |
Take this course before planning an event or camporee serving more than 50 girls. | Required of at least one adult for any event or camporee serving more than 50 girls |

CPR & First Aid Level 1 (6 hours) This course is only offered in-person. |
Take this course before specified activities as outlined in Safety-Wise. | Required of at least one adult in attendance for certain activities per Safety-Wise or CRG |
